About this place
Nosong-dong Catholic Church is an urban parish of the Diocese of Jeonju, serving Catholics in the Nosong and Inbong areas near the boundary of Wansan-gu and Deokjin-gu. Its patron is St. Francis of Assisi. It is a local center for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, small communities, and devotional life.
Located where Jeonju’s old city connects with neighborhoods to the east, the parish has also served historically as a mother community from which newer parishes emerged as the city expanded. Its present territory is smaller than it once was, but its primary identity remains that of an ordinary parish where local Catholics sustain their liturgical and faith life. The Franciscan patronage and the apostolate of a religious community add a distinctive Catholic tone to the parish’s life of prayer and service.
The parish’s earlier responsibility for a broad part of eastern Jeonju helps explain the character of the community today. Nosong-dong now serves a more defined local territory after repeated divisions, yet it retains the memory of a mother parish connected with the formation of neighboring communities. Its present form therefore reflects both the continuity of an old-city Catholic community and changes in diocesan pastoral organization as the city expanded.
History & origins
Nosong-dong Parish was established on October 1, 1968, when it was separated from Jeonju’s Jungang Parish. At the time it served not only Jungnosong-dong and Namnosong-dong but also Inhu-dong, Uah-dong, and parts of Wanju County, becoming a new pastoral center in response to the growth of the Church in eastern Jeonju.
As urban development and residential expansion continued, new Catholic communities grew within the territory of Nosong-dong Parish. Weekend Mass began to be celebrated in the Inhu area in 1980, and in 1981 a mission-station community took shape around new apartment neighborhoods. As the Catholic population increased and the need for independent ministry became greater, Inhu-dong Parish was separated from Nosong-dong on January 14, 1987.
This process of parish division shows that the shrinking of Nosong-dong’s territory was also evidence of its role as a mother parish from which new communities emerged as eastern Jeonju developed. After initially serving a broad eastern area, the parish adjusted its territory as population and Catholic communities changed and today continues a more locally focused ministry centered on Nosong-dong.
The separation of Inhu-dong illustrates a recurring pattern within the former territory of Nosong-dong: as new residential areas developed, a local Mass community and then a mission station formed first, and once the community reached sufficient size it developed into an independent parish. The history of Nosong-dong is therefore significant less as the story of one church building than as a record of how Catholic communities in eastern Jeonju divided and created pastoral centers closer to where people lived.
