About this place

Mupung Mission Station belongs to Muju Parish in the Diocese of Jeonju and serves as a local center of liturgical and community life for Catholics in Mupung-myeon. The current diocesan list identifies it as a mission station under Muju Parish, while a diocesan feature describes it as the oldest mission station still existing in the Muju area.

Because of the mountainous setting, Catholic life in Mupung has long been sustained through the mission-station community rather than a large parish church. Today the station preserves the memory of local Catholics who maintained their faith through persecution, migration, and population decline, and it remains connected with Muju Parish as a place for Mass and communal Catholic life.

History & origins

Catholic mountain communities existed around Mupung before the Byeongin Persecution, but the number of visible Catholics declined sharply after the persecution. According to the Diocese of Jeonju, missionary activity resumed around 1878, Catholics again gathered in places such as Yeoune and Mupung, and Mupung Mission Station was established in 1883. The faithful sustained their community while making a living in the mountain region.

During the first half of the twentieth century, the Catholic population weakened as many residents moved elsewhere for work. Around the time of the Korean War, however, the community began to recover. Voluntary evangelizing efforts by local Catholics—including the work of Agatha Lee Bun-i, who settled in the area after fleeing Seoul—helped revive Catholic life.

A 2007 diocesan record states that after 2000 the Cheolmok and Unsan mission communities were incorporated into Mupung Mission Station. The history of Mupung is therefore less the story of a single building preserved unchanged than of several small mountain communities dispersing, regrouping, and continuing their faith. The present mission station remains an old and visible sign of that continuity in the Muju region.
