About this place

Mapo Mission Station belongs to Deungyong Parish in the Catholic Diocese of Jeonju and continues Catholic community life in a coastal rural area of Byeonsan-myeon, Buan County. Current diocesan records also confirm it as a mission station under Deungyong Parish. It serves as a local point where Catholics living at a distance from the parish church can gather in prayer, share their faith, and remain connected with parish pastoral life.

The character of Mapo’s community is also tied to the history of land reclamation and migration in the area. Catholic families who moved into a new place of livelihood built a faith community alongside their new settlement. Today the mission station shows the distinctive form of rural Catholic life in which people sustain faith through close relationships and mutual care within their local living area.

History & origins

The beginnings of Mapo Mission Station are connected with land-reclamation work in the Byeonsan area during the 1960s. A diocesan account records that a reclamation project associated with the late Father Kim Yeong-gu led twelve Catholic households from places including Gimje, Hamyeol, and Jinan to settle in the area. As these families worked to establish a new agricultural settlement, a Catholic community naturally formed alongside their shared life.

Current records of the Diocese of Jeonju give 1964 as the year of establishment of Mapo Mission Station. Around that time, the migrant Catholic community became organized as a mission station linked with a parish, providing a nearby center of faith for rural Catholics who otherwise had to travel farther to the parish church. The history is distinctive because the settlement community and the Catholic community were formed almost together.

Mapo continued despite demographic change and the difficulties faced by rural communities. A more recent diocesan account also describes renewed vitality as new families and younger members became involved. The history that began with the faith gatherings of settlers on reclaimed land thus continues in the small mission community of today.
