About this place

Manseong-dong Parish belongs to the North Jeonju District of the Catholic Diocese of Jeonju and serves Catholics in Manseong-dong, the Jeonju Innovation City living area, and parts of Iseo-myeon in Wanju County. Its patron is Blessed Augustine Yu Hang-geom, a Korean martyr. It is a relatively new parish formed as new towns and the innovation-city area of northwestern Jeonju grew, bringing Catholics in rapidly changing residential districts into a single parish community.

The character of this parish is closely tied to urban development and population movement rather than to an old rural Catholic village. As new apartments, public institutions, and residential infrastructure were built, a pastoral center was created so that Catholics could attend Mass, receive the sacraments, and continue faith formation close to where they lived. Manseong-dong now serves as a local parish linking communities across the Jeonju–Wanju living area.

History & origins

Manseong-dong Parish was created as the Catholic population grew rapidly with the development of Jeonju Innovation City and surrounding new residential districts. On February 15, 2015, the Diocese of Jeonju celebrated the founding Mass for the new parish at Chonami Shrine. The community began as a new pastoral unit serving both Jeonju Innovation City and the Iseo area of Wanju.

Blessed Augustine Yu Hang-geom, closely connected with the early history of Catholic faith in the Jeonju region, was chosen as the parish patron. Although the parish began in a new city, choosing a martyr associated with the region linked the new community’s identity with the older tradition of faith in the Diocese of Jeonju. Soon after the foundation, organization of the parish and preparation of its church proceeded together.

According to the diocesan chronology, the church of Manseong-dong was dedicated on December 5 of the same year. Thus the physical and pastoral foundations of the new community were established within a relatively short period after the parish was created. The beginnings of Manseong-dong illustrate how the diocese responded to population movement caused by the development of the Jeonju–Wanju innovation-city area by establishing a new parish.
