About this place

Manseok Mission Station belongs to Julpo Parish in the Catholic Diocese of Jeonju and is a long-established rural Catholic community in Boan-myeon, Buan County. Catholic directory and diocesan records confirm that the mission station’s history reaches back to the late nineteenth century. It is a place where Catholics living at a distance from the parish church gathered for prayer and handed on the faith, preserving deep roots of Catholic life in southern Buan.

The significance of Manseok today lies less in its size or the presence of resident clergy than in the continuity of a community in the same locality over many generations. Catholics maintained their faith through changes in village life, war, and successive changes to the mission buildings. The mission station connects those memories of local Catholic life with the present community of Julpo Parish.

History & origins

Diocesan records date the establishment of Manseok Mission Station to 1883. A Catholic community formed as believers settled in the Boan-myeon area of Buan, and the number of Catholics increased over time. The diocesan account notes that the mission community once grew to about three hundred members.

As the community expanded, it also prepared a dedicated place of prayer. In 1915, mission leader Kim Yang-hui built a four-kan chapel on his own field, and in 1919 the building was moved to the site of the present mission station. This marked the transition from household or temporary gatherings to a lasting space shared by the village Catholic community.

The Korean War caused serious damage to the mission station. After the building was heavily damaged, it was demolished and rebuilt in 1958, restoring a place of faith for the community. From its late-nineteenth-century foundation through war and reconstruction in the twentieth century, Manseok’s history shows how a rural Catholic community created and preserved its own shared religious space.
