About this place
Mangyeong Parish belongs to the Gimje–Jeongeup–Gochang–Buan District of the Catholic Diocese of Jeonju and serves Catholics in Mangyeong-eup as well as Cheongha-myeon, Gwanghwal-myeon, Jinbong-myeon, and Seongdeok-myeon of Gimje. Its patron is Saint Francis Xavier, and it has pastoral responsibility for Gwanghwal Mission Station. The parish links Catholic communities scattered across several rural townships within a broad pastoral territory.
Because it is centered in the agricultural area of the Gimje plain, the role of Mangyeong differs somewhat from that of an urban parish. It provides a central place where Catholics living across widely separated communities can continue Mass, the sacraments, faith formation, and parish activities. The relationship between the parish and its mission station illustrates how Catholic communities sustain their life of faith across a large rural area.
History & origins
Mangyeong Parish was established by the Diocese of Jeonju on January 29, 2000, in order to provide closer pastoral care to the rural northwestern part of Gimje. By bringing Catholics in Mangyeong-eup and several surrounding townships into one parish community, the diocese created a stable structure for parish ministry among believers scattered across the broad agricultural plain.
After its foundation, the community continued to develop its church facilities and establish a center for local pastoral life. Under the missionary patronage of Saint Francis Xavier, the parish and Gwanghwal Mission Station became connected within a structure that sustained Mass, the sacraments, and faith formation throughout the wide territory.
More than ten years after the parish was founded, the new church was dedicated on November 27, 2010. The dedication represented more than the completion of a building: it marked the point at which the parish community established in 2000 had taken stable root in the area. Mangyeong has since continued as a parish linking several rural communities in northwestern Gimje.
