About this place

Majeon Mission Station belongs to Yeosan Parish in the Catholic Diocese of Jeonju and serves as a Catholic community space in Yeonmu-eup, Nonsan. The current Catholic directory also confirms it as a long-established mission station. The wider Yeosan area was a region where Catholics fleeing persecution formed a number of Catholic villages, and Majeon arose as one of the long-standing communities within that historical setting.

Unlike a parish with a resident priest, a mission station sustains local Catholic life in connection with the pastoral ministry of its mother parish. Majeon is now under Yeosan Parish, but it preserves a memory of Catholic community life that predates many later changes in parish boundaries and foundations around the area. It is therefore both a present-day mission station in Yeonmu and a place that reflects the deep roots of Catholic faith in the Yeosan region.

History & origins

Catholic communities in the Yeosan area were formed as believers fleeing persecution in the late Joseon period dispersed and settled in mountain and rural districts. The Korean Catholic Encyclopedia’s history of Yeosan Parish records the development of several Catholic villages and mission stations in the region and identifies Majeon-ri Mission Station as established in 1898. This shows that local Catholics had already organized a shared life of faith before an independent parish was established at Yeosan.

Majeon’s ecclesiastical jurisdiction changed several times as the parish system of the region developed. At different stages it came under parishes such as Nabawi, Doejae, Sucheong, and Samnye, which then served large territories, and later again under Nabawi. The mission station itself did not move; rather, its affiliation changed as parish boundaries across northern Jeolla and southern Chungcheong were reorganized.

After Yeosan Parish was established in 1959, Majeon Mission Station became directly connected with it and has continued within that structure. The history of a mission station remaining in the same locality while passing through several mother parishes shows how Catholic village life formed after persecution was incorporated into the modern parish system and endured.
