About this place

Madong Parish belongs to the Iksan South District of the Catholic Diocese of Jeonju and serves parts of Madong, Dongsan-dong, Geumgang-dong, and Sinheung-dong in Iksan. Its patron is Saint Paul Chong Hasang, one of the Korean Martyrs. Situated where several urban neighborhoods meet, it is a local parish responsible for Mass, the sacraments, faith formation, and the communal life of Catholics in the area.

Madong is also significant as a parish formed by reorganizing the territories of existing urban parishes. As population and residential patterns changed, the need for sustained pastoral care closer to local Catholics increased, leading to the creation of an independent parish community. Today Madong Parish serves as a stable pastoral center linking Catholics across the southern urban area of Iksan.

History & origins

Madong Parish was newly established by the Diocese of Jeonju on January 22, 2002. Portions of the territories of Juhyeon-dong, Changin-dong, and Yeongdeung-dong parishes covering Madong and nearby neighborhoods were separated to form an independent community. This was part of a reorganization of large existing parish territories in response to changes in the urban living area of Iksan.

Saint Paul Chong Hasang was chosen as the patron of the new parish. Beginning under the name of a Korean martyr who witnessed to the Catholic faith, Catholics in the newly organized territory gained a basis for forming a single parish community around Mass, the sacraments, faith formation, and parish associations.

The history of Madong differs from that of parishes that grew directly from old Catholic villages. It emerged from the expansion of Iksan’s urban area and a reorganization of parish boundaries in the twenty-first century, illustrating how the diocese refined its pastoral structure in order to care for growing local communities more closely.
