About this place

Jungsan Parish belongs to District 2 of the Diocese of Jeonju and serves part of Junghwasan-dong 2-ga in Wansan-gu, Jeonju, together with nearby apartment communities. Its patron is Saint Francis of Assisi, and the parish church is the center where local Catholics gather for Mass, the sacraments, and parish community life.

As a relatively recent urban parish, Jungsan reflects the expansion of residential areas in Jeonju and the corresponding reorganization of parish territories. Its main character is not that of a major historic monument or pilgrimage shrine, but that of a neighborhood parish enabling Catholics to sustain their faith close to where they live. The Diocese of Jeonju’s current parish profile clearly identifies it as an independent parish with its own territory and patron saint.

History & origins

The Diocese of Jeonju’s current parish profile records February 3, 2013, as the establishment date of Jungsan Parish. As residential areas in Jeonju expanded and parish communities were reorganized into smaller pastoral territories, Jungsan took shape as an independent parish serving part of Junghwasan-dong 2-ga and nearby apartment complexes, with Saint Francis of Assisi as its patron.

After its establishment, the community developed its liturgical and parish life and became rooted in the daily living area of local Catholics. Records of the Diocese of Jeonju’s 80th-anniversary sacred music festival in 2017 show the Gloria Choir of Jungsan Parish taking part, illustrating how the new parish’s liturgical and cultural life extended into diocesan activities. Today, Jungsan continues its role as a local parish in western urban Jeonju within the pastoral territory established for it.
