About this place
Jung-ri Mission Station is a Catholic mission station registered under Jinan Parish in the Diocese of Jeonju, in Jungmal village of Jinan-eup. The Diocese of Jeonju’s current mission-station list identifies it as belonging to Jinan Parish and marks it as inactive. It is therefore more appropriate to understand the site not as a mission station with regular present-day activity, but as a local place of faith preserving traces of the way Jinan Parish remained connected with Catholics across its broad rural territory.
Jinan Parish covers all of Jinan County and has long maintained a network of mission stations serving Catholics in mountain and farming villages. Jung-ri was one of the local points through which this parish–mission-station structure supported village-level Catholic life. Even though its operational status has changed, the site shows how Catholic life in the Jinan area extended beyond a single parish church through a network of mission stations in surrounding communities.
History & origins
The Korean Catholic directory records the establishment of Jung-ri Mission Station in May 1977. This confirms that by the late 1970s a distinct mission-station community and place existed in Jungmal village of Jinan-eup. Jung-ri subsequently continued as one of the mission stations under Jinan Parish.
The Diocese of Jeonju’s current mission-station list marks Jung-ri as inactive. Publicly available official sources do not provide enough detail to reconstruct later milestones such as construction or blessing of the building or the date when regular operation changed. The verifiable historical framework is therefore the 1977 establishment record and its present inactive status, while the intervening development still requires additional documentation.
