About this place
Jungang Cathedral is the cathedral church of the Diocese of Jeonju and at the same time the center of an independent parish community. As the church containing the bishop’s cathedra, where the diocesan bishop presides at major liturgies, it serves both as the liturgical center of the whole diocese and as a parish church with ordinary local pastoral functions. The parish patron is the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
The present church building was erected in the 1950s and represents postwar Catholic architecture in Korea, having hosted important diocesan liturgies and events for many decades. In April 2026 it was registered as a National Registered Cultural Heritage property under the name “Jeonju Jungang Catholic Church.” It is therefore both the central church of the diocesan community for Catholics and a place where visitors can encounter the growth of Korean Catholicism after the war and the modern religious architecture of Jeonju.
History & origins
The Diocese of Jeonju’s current records give November 1, 1947, as the establishment date of Jungang Parish. Construction of the present church began in July 1955 after the Korean War, was completed on July 25, 1956, and the church was dedicated on August 6 of that year in a liturgy presided over by Bishop Kim Hyeon-bae. Diocesan material describes it as a Gothic-style church built on a site of 1,263 pyeong.
The church’s status changed significantly in 1957. On June 11, 1957, Bishop Kim Hyeon-bae transferred the diocesan cathedra from Jeondong Catholic Church to Jungang, after which Jungang became the cathedral of the Diocese of Jeonju and a principal setting for major diocesan liturgies and events. This transfer marked an important moment in which the center of diocesan life moved from Jeondong to Jungang as the diocese developed.
The building completed in 1956 has continued to be used while retaining its basic form. On April 6, 2026, the Korea Heritage Service registered Jeonju Jungang Catholic Church as a National Registered Cultural Heritage property, formally recognizing its value in modern religious architecture and local church history. The sequence from parish establishment to postwar construction, transfer of the cathedra, and heritage registration shows how Jungang Cathedral is connected not only with its local parish but with the wider history of the Diocese of Jeonju.
