Jongsan Mission Station

About this place

Jongsan Mission Station is identified in the current Diocese of Jeonju mission-station list as being under Chilbo Parish in Sanoe-myeon, Jeongeup. The diocesan list currently marks it as inactive, so it is more appropriate to understand it as a surviving trace of an older Catholic community within Chilbo Parish territory rather than to assume that regular mission-station activity continues.

Several mission stations were formed in the Sanoe and Chilbo area of Jeongeup from the late nineteenth century, and a Diocese of Jeonju record concerning the Chilbo missionary parish mentions Jongsan together with Dongmak and Neunggyo as older mission stations of the region. Jongsan therefore remains significant as a place reflecting the formation and continuity of rural Catholic communities before the later development of the parish structure. The sources disagree on its foundation year, however, so no date is asserted in the historical section.
