About this place
Jochon-dong Catholic Church is a parish in District 5 of the Diocese of Jeonju serving the Gunsan area. Current diocesan information describes the parish as covering Jochon-dong, Guam-dong, Naeheung-dong, Sajeong-dong, Gaejeong-dong, Seongsan-myeon, and parts of neighboring areas, with St. Paul Chong Hasang as its patron. It serves as a center of local Catholic life, linking several communities in eastern Gunsan for Mass, the sacraments, and parish faith life.
A parish refers not simply to a church building but to the Catholic community within a defined territory. The fact that Jochon-dong Parish extends across several neighborhoods and rural districts shows its role in embracing both urban Gunsan and surrounding communities. A diocesan record of the parish's 30th anniversary in 2018 notes that priests from the parish, former pastors, religious, and local Catholics gathered for the commemorative Mass, showing that a community spanning several generations had developed there.
History & origins
Current Diocese of Jeonju records give December 31, 1987, as the establishment date of Jochon-dong Parish. Emerging amid urban growth in Gunsan and the division of existing parish communities, Jochon-dong began as an independent pastoral community for Catholics in Jochon-dong and neighboring areas, with St. Paul Chong Hasang as its patron.
After its foundation, the parish grew to embrace several neighborhoods and rural districts in eastern Gunsan. The territory now listed by the Diocese of Jeonju extends beyond Jochon-dong to Guam-dong, Naeheung-dong, Sajeong-dong, Gaejeong-dong, Seongsan-myeon, and parts of nearby areas. This broad territory shows how the parish developed beyond the role of a single neighborhood church and came to serve Catholic life across a wider local area.
In August 2018, the parish celebrated a Mass for the 30th anniversary of its foundation. According to diocesan records, Bishop John Kim Son-tae presided, joined by priests from the parish, former pastors, religious, and local Catholics; before Mass, the newly refurbished church doors were also blessed. The same account noted that six priests had come from the parish by that time, reflecting the community's continuing life of faith and vocations.
The 30th anniversary was both a commemoration of the parish's beginnings and an occasion to hand the memory of the community on to the next generation. Jochon-dong Parish continues the local role for which it was founded, linking Catholics across eastern Gunsan and surrounding areas.
