About this place
Jigok Parish is a Catholic parish in District 5 of the Diocese of Jeonju, serving Jigok-dong and surrounding apartment communities in Gunsan. Its patron is Saint James the Less, and a community of the Franciscan Missionary Sisters of Assisi is present in the parish. The church functions as the local setting for Mass, the sacraments, faith formation, and parish community life within an urban residential area.
Jigok was formed by dividing the territory of existing parishes as residential districts in southeastern Gunsan expanded. Its background therefore differs from churches that grew around old martyrdom sites or historic Catholic villages; rather, it is an example of a modern urban parish created to provide a closer pastoral center as patterns of residence changed. The Diocese of Jeonju’s current parish information continues to identify it clearly as an independent parish with its own territory.
History & origins
Jigok Parish was established on January 26, 2002, after being separated from Naun-dong and Naun 2-dong parishes in Gunsan. Diocesan records from the period state that about 574 households and 1,603 Catholics formed the new parish community. Its origin lay in dividing the pastoral territory of existing parishes to serve a rapidly growing residential area.
Construction of a new parish church began in earnest with a groundbreaking ceremony on December 15 of the same year. According to diocesan reporting, work continued until the church was dedicated on July 17, 2003, in a liturgy presided over by Bishop Lee Byeong-ho, with rites including the presentation of the church key and anointing. In roughly a year and a half after its establishment, the new parish had completed a church building and liturgical space of its own.
Through this process, Jigok developed from a newly organized community into a parish with its own church and stable liturgical center. The current diocesan parish profile continues to record the 2002 establishment date and Saint James the Less as patron, showing continuity between the parish’s founding, the building of its church, and its identity today.
