About this place

Jangsu Catholic Church is the church and pastoral center of a parish in District 1 of the Catholic Diocese of Jeonju, serving Jangsu-eup and Beonam-myeon. The current diocesan directory names St. Joseph as the parish patron and lists several mission communities under Jangsu Parish. It links Catholics scattered across a mountainous rural area through the parish-and-mission-station structure, providing a center for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life.

Jangsu Parish has the historical background of having grown from a mission community under Janggye Parish before becoming independent. Today it serves the main town of Jangsu while remaining connected with mission stations in Beonam-myeon, so it is best understood not simply as one church building but as the pastoral center of several Catholic communities spread over a broad rural area. Its core identity is that of the Catholic center of the Jangsu area under the patronage of St. Joseph.

History & origins

Jangsu Parish developed from Jangsu Mission Station under Janggye Parish. The Korean Catholic Encyclopedia records that a mission station already existed in Jangsu-eup when Janggye Parish was established in 1954, after which it remained under Janggye's care. In 1965 the community acquired a site with a thatched house to serve as its mission building, giving the local Catholics a more stable base.

In 1973 the earlier property was sold and a new site was acquired at the location of the present parish, where a hall of about fifty pyeong was built. From that time, the pastor of Janggye visited the mission station weekly to celebrate Mass and administer the sacraments, allowing the Jangsu community to develop the conditions needed for an independent parish. Formal preparation for separation began in 1976.

Jangsu became an independent parish in 1977. The exact date differs between authoritative sources: the current Diocese of Jeonju directory gives July 20, while the Korean Catholic Encyclopedia gives June 30, so this account uses only the year. The parish subsequently developed around Catholics in Jangsu-eup and Beonam-myeon together with its mission communities. Its history is the story of a small mission station under Janggye that secured land and worship space, built a regular sacramental life, and eventually matured into an independent parish.
