About this place
Janggye Catholic Church is the church and pastoral center of a parish in District 1 of the Catholic Diocese of Jeonju, serving Janggye-myeon, Gyename-myeon, Gyebuk-myeon, and Cheoncheon-myeon in Jangsu County. The current diocesan directory names Our Lady of the Rosary as the parish patron. It functions as a regional parish where Catholics scattered among mountain villages gather for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life.
The identity of Janggye Parish is rooted in the much older Catholic village tradition of the Jangsu region. The present parish emerged from faith communities associated with the former Subun-ri parish and its mission stations, whose center was eventually reorganized in the Janggye area. Janggye is therefore both a living territorial parish today and a place that carries the memory of Catholic communities in eastern Jangsu adapting their center and organization as local conditions changed.
History & origins
The roots of Janggye Parish reach back to Catholic villages formed in the mountainous parts of Jangsu after the Byeongin Persecution and to the former parish at Subun-ri. The Diocese of Jeonju's 60th-anniversary account describes a parish and several mission stations at Subun and notes that the community later came for a time under Namwon Parish. In the early 1950s preparations were made for a new parish centered on Janggye, including the acquisition of land and a house, and Janggye Parish was formally established on May 19, 1954.
After its establishment, the parish pursued construction of a permanent church, leading to the dedication of the new church in 1958. Janggye did not limit its early work to providing a place of worship: in 1959 it established Mae-goe Clinic to meet medical needs in the region, an institution that later became St. Mary's Hospital. This illustrates how a mountain parish developed in close relationship not only with Catholic life but also with the everyday needs of the surrounding community.
The parish territory was later reorganized as Catholic communities in the region changed. As the mission community around Jangsu grew, Jangsu Parish became independent in 1977, while Janggye remained the central parish for Janggye, Gyename, Gyebuk, and Cheoncheon. Its history can therefore be understood as the continuation of the old Subun faith tradition through the creation of a more accessible parish center that gradually broadened its role within local society.
