About this place
Inwol Mission Station is a Catholic mission community under Unbong Parish in the Diocese of Jeonju, serving Catholics in Inwol-myeon, Namwon. The current diocesan list identifies Inwol as a mission station of Unbong Parish and gives the same location as the package. For Catholics living and traveling through the Inwol and Jirisan area, it provides a local community connected to the parish center.
Diocesan records show that Inwol has long been more than a place where Mass and prayers are held; it has also been a setting for fellowship and the handing on of faith among local Catholics. Its distance from the parish church does not mean isolation, but reflects the traditional mission-station structure in which a small local community cares for its own sacred space while remaining part of the parish. For visitors, its most important identity is therefore that of a mission station of Unbong Parish and a long-standing home of Catholic community life in Inwol.
History & origins
The roots of Inwol Mission Station lie in an earlier Catholic community at Supsil in Bongdae-ri, Ayeong-myeon. Diocesan records state that Badricio Im Seok-gi, who had encountered the faith near the Subun-ri parish community in Jangsu, moved to Bongdae-ri and evangelized there, leading many families in the village to become Catholic. Later, Alex Lee Sang-tae concluded that the community would have greater room to grow if it moved toward the town of Inwol.
Around 1958, with the permission of the pastor of Namwon Ssanggyodong Parish, Lee purchased land in Inwol and built a temporary mission chapel. Because there were almost no Catholics in Inwol at the time, he moved there with his family, cared for the mission station, and began evangelizing. He also operated a daycare center and helped establish a credit union, creating places where local people could gather. Catholics from nearby Bongdae-ri and Seong-ri came to Inwol for seasonal confession, and the new location gradually became a regional center.
As the community grew, the old structure was removed and a new mission building was constructed with materials supplied in part by a nearby military unit and with the labor of the faithful. The new building was blessed in 1971. The history of Inwol is thus the story of a small mountain Catholic community moving toward a more accessible market town and building a center of faith through evangelization, education, cooperation, and shared labor.
