About this place

Inhu-dong Catholic Church is the church and pastoral center of a parish in District 1 of the Catholic Diocese of Jeonju, serving Catholics in the Inhu-dong area through Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and parish community life. The current diocesan information identifies the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary as the parish patron and lists Inhu-dong as the leading parish of District 1. Having grown together with the surrounding residential area, it forms an established Catholic community within the everyday life of eastern Jeonju.

The parish is also significant as an example of a new Catholic community created by urban expansion and eventually developed into an independent parish. Although new parishes were later separated from its territory as surrounding neighborhoods grew, Inhu-dong continued to hold an important place in the Catholic life of eastern Jeonju. For visitors, its essential character is that of a Diocese of Jeonju parish dedicated to the Assumption and shaped by the growth of the Inhu-dong residential district.

History & origins

The need for a parish in Inhu-dong arose as apartment development from the mid-1970s brought rapid growth in both population and the number of Catholics. Discussion within the diocese about establishing a parish began in 1978, and from May 1980 a priest from Nosong-dong Parish celebrated the Saturday evening Sunday Mass in a rented space in Inhu-dong. In 1981, the Inhu Apartment Mission Station was formally established under Nosong-dong Parish.

As the mission community grew, a church-building committee was formed in 1984, and Inhu-dong became an independent parish in January 1987. Authoritative sources differ on the exact day: the current diocesan page gives January 24, while the Korean Catholic Encyclopedia gives January 14, so this account uses only January 1987. After a period in temporary quarters, the parish purchased land in 1987 and completed the church together with a rectory, convent, and other facilities in 1988.

The new church was dedicated in May 1990. As Catholic population continued to spread through the area, Hoseong-dong Parish was separated in 1989, Soyang Parish in 1995, and Ua-dong Parish in 2002. Inhu-dong's history therefore shows how a small mission community born from the expansion of eastern Jeonju grew into an independent parish and later became one of the mother parishes from which new local communities emerged.
