About this place
Hyoja-dong Parish is a Catholic parish of the Diocese of Jeonju serving parts of the Hyoja-dong and Samcheon-dong living areas in Wansan-gu. The current diocesan directory names Our Lady of Fatima as the parish patron and marks May 13 as the patronal feast. Although the parish is now called Hyoja-dong, its early identity was closely linked with devotion to Our Lady of Fatima.
Today the parish serves Catholics living around the Seobu Market, Hyoja-dong, and Samcheon-dong, where older neighborhoods and apartment complexes stand side by side. It is a local center for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life, with the Seongga Sobinyeohoe religious community serving alongside the parish. Because several neighboring parishes were later separated from Hyoja-dong, the parish also has significance as one of the mother parishes from which Catholic communities in southwestern Jeonju developed.
History & origins
The creation of Hyoja-dong Parish was closely tied to urban development that began in the area in the mid-1970s. The district was then part of Jeondong Parish, but rapid growth in population and Catholic membership led the diocese and Jeondong Parish to prepare a new church. The present site was purchased in August 1975, a church-building committee was organized in March 1977, and a groundbreaking ceremony was held on June 5 of that year.
Construction proceeded with support from the diocese and the Jeondong community, and the church was dedicated on April 14, 1978. The Korean Catholic Encyclopedia records that the parish was formally established on April 20 and that Father Moon Jeong-hyeon Bartholomew became its first pastor. The parish was initially named “Fatima” and took Our Lady of Fatima as its patron. The current Diocese of Jeonju directory lists October 13, 1977 as the establishment date under a different administrative convention, so the sources use different milestones when identifying the parish’s beginning.
The parish continued to divide as Hyoja-dong grew. Its name was changed to Hyoja-dong at the end of 1984, and Ujeon Parish in 1988, Yongmeori Parish in 1989, Hwasan-dong Parish in 1990, and Samcheon-dong Parish in 1994 were successively separated from it. This history shows that Hyoja-dong became not merely a parish for one neighborhood but a major mother community in the expansion of Catholic parish life across southwestern Jeonju.
