About this place

Hwasan-dong Parish is a Catholic parish of the Diocese of Jeonju serving parts of Junghwasan-dong and Hyoja-dong in Wansan-gu, Jeonju. The current diocesan directory names Saint Andrew Kim Taegon, Korea’s first Catholic priest, as its patron. The parish community therefore draws particular spiritual meaning from the witness of the Korean martyrs and from the priestly vocation represented by its patron.

The parish territory is an urban living area where apartment complexes and older residential neighborhoods stand side by side. Hwasan-dong Parish is the local center for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life, and a community of the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus also participates in parish ministry. Because the parish emerged amid the expansion of the Hyoja area, it reflects the development of modern parish life alongside the growth of western Jeonju.

History & origins

Hwasan-dong Parish began against the background of rapid urban development and Catholic population growth in the Hyoja area during the late 1980s. Hyoja-dong Parish had already created new parishes at Ujeon and Yongmeori as its community expanded, and another parish became necessary for the Junghwasan-dong area. The current Diocese of Jeonju directory records February 16, 1990, as the establishment date of Hwasan-dong Parish.

In its early years the parish used a prefabricated building rather than a large permanent church. A Catholic Times report states that the prefabricated church built in June 1990 served as the parish’s liturgical space. The community later began preparing a more permanent church, and construction of a new building was under way by the late 1990s.

On Good Friday, April 10, 1998, a fire believed to have been caused by an electrical short broke out in the prefabricated church, heavily damaging the nursery, meeting room, and storage area for liturgical items. Parishioners helped fight the fire and move furnishings to safety, and the Easter liturgies were transferred to the basement of the new church then under construction. The fire became a significant trial during the parish’s transition from its temporary church to a new permanent space.
