Hwanggeum Mission Station is a Catholic mission community in the Jinan area of the Diocese of Jeonju, formed to support the faith life of Catholics living around Hwanggeum-ri in Bugwi-myeon. The Catholic Church directory in Korea lists Hwanggeum as a mission station of the Diocese of Jeonju and retains a representative address on Banggak-gil in Bugwi-myeon.
The significance of Hwanggeum lies in the continuation of Catholic community life in a mountainous rural village some distance from the parish church in Jinan-eup. The historical record of Jinan Parish lists Hwanggeum among the mission stations served by the parish. It is therefore best understood not as an independent parish but as part of the rural mission-station tradition through which Mass, catechesis, and common prayer were sustained across the broad pastoral territory of Jinan.
History & origins
Hwanggeum Mission Station took its present form during the expansion of rural mission-station ministry by Jinan Parish in the 1970s. The Catholic Church directory in Korea records 1977 as the year of establishment. At that time Jinan Parish was improving mission facilities in villages across its broad mountainous territory in order to serve Catholics who lived far from the parish church.
According to the Korean Catholic Encyclopedia’s history of Jinan Parish, during the tenure of its fourteenth pastor, Father Seo Seok-gu, mission stations were newly built in Jungri in Jinan-eup and Hwanggeum-ri in Bugwi-myeon in 1977. Hwanggeum therefore became a local center where Catholics in Bugwi-myeon could more readily gather for Mass and common faith life.
This chronology suggests that Hwanggeum should not be identified directly with the entire, much older history of Catholicism in Jinan. Rather, it belongs to the network of mission stations developed by Jinan Parish in the later twentieth century to make pastoral care possible across a wide rural area. Its history reflects the way parish ministry was extended to remote village communities.
