About this place
Hosung Mansu Parish belongs to the eastern district of the Diocese of Jeonju and serves a Catholic community centered on the Jinheung W-Park apartment complexes and nearby residential areas of Hosung-dong. The current diocesan directory identifies Saint Francis of Assisi as the parish patron, with his feast on October 4 serving as an important spiritual point of reference for the community.
Hosung Mansu is a relatively young parish, created as the population and Catholic community of Hosung-dong expanded beyond the capacity of the existing Hosung-dong Parish. Its church is now the center where the independent parish community celebrates the liturgy and carries out catechesis, fellowship, and local pastoral work. Formed within a large apartment-centered residential area in northeastern Jeonju, it illustrates how diocesan pastoral structures can be reorganized in response to changes in the urban environment.
History & origins
Hosung Mansu Parish began on February 12, 2012, when it was separated from Hosung-dong Parish. As apartment development increased and the Catholic population of Hosung-dong grew, the diocese created a new pastoral unit within the expanding residential area. A separate church building was not immediately available, so the new community initially shared facilities with Hosung-dong Parish, a period described by the diocese as “two households under one roof.”
Construction of a church for the independent community later moved forward. According to diocesan records, a groundbreaking ceremony was held on March 9, 2014, for a planned building with one basement level and two floors above ground. The ceremony marked more than the start of construction: it was a turning point for Catholics who had been organizing an independent parish life since the separation.
The history of Hosung Mansu thus differs from that of older rural Catholic villages. It arose from modern urban residential growth and the division of an existing parish. The movement from separation from Hosung-dong, through a period of shared facilities, to the construction of its own church reflects the Diocese of Jeonju’s pastoral response to the growth of northeastern Jeonju.
