About this place

Hosung-dong Parish belongs to the eastern district of the Diocese of Jeonju and serves the Catholic community of Hosung-dong in Deokjin-gu, including residential areas around Jeonju Station. The current diocesan directory identifies the Sacred Heart of Jesus as the parish patron, and the community continues its liturgical and spiritual life with the spirituality of the Sacred Heart at its center.

The parish territory includes apartment complexes, older residential neighborhoods, and the living area around Jeonju Station. Hosung-dong is therefore not a church serving only a single housing development, but a local parish connecting Catholics of different generations and residential settings in northeastern Jeonju. A community of the Olivetan Benedictine Sisters also serves alongside the parish, reflecting the presence of religious life in support of its liturgy, faith formation, and community life.

History & origins

The formation of Hosung-dong Parish was closely connected with the urbanization of northern Jeonju. From the mid-1970s, apartment development in Inhu-dong and neighboring areas brought a growing Catholic population. In 1987 Inhu-dong Parish was separated from Nosong-dong Parish to serve this expanding community, but continued growth in Hosung-dong soon created the need for another parish.

The Diocese of Jeonju therefore separated Hosung-dong Parish from Inhu-dong in August 1989. The current diocesan directory records August 25 as its establishment date. The new parish took the Sacred Heart of Jesus as its patron and gradually developed an independent pastoral structure for Catholics in Hosung-dong and the surrounding area.

Further residential development and demographic change in Hosung-dong later led to another adjustment of parish boundaries. In 2012 Hosung Mansu Parish was separated from Hosung-dong and began as a new community. This sequence shows how Hosung-dong Parish grew out of the urban expansion of northeastern Jeonju and in turn became the mother parish of another local Catholic community.
