Han Catholic Mission Station

History & origins

The Catholic community at Hangyo is described in diocesan records as having grown from several Catholic families who moved from the Nabawi area around 1920, made pottery for a living, and maintained their faith. There was no separate chapel at first, so during seasonal confession periods the homes of mission-station leaders or local Catholic leaders served as places where the community gathered and prepared for the sacraments.

Hangyo Mission Station is recorded as formally established in 1947. After the Korean War, Catholics worked at their livelihoods during the day and made bricks at night, contributing their own labor to building the mission-station church. This process is a characteristic example of a rural Catholic community that created its place of faith through shared sacrifice rather than simply receiving a finished facility from elsewhere.

Hangyo later continued as a mission station under Yeonji-dong Parish. Although the village’s population and composition have changed, the sequence of Catholic settlement from the 1920s, formal establishment in 1947, and postwar communal construction shows that this place was formed through the lived history of its community, not merely through its building.
