About this place

The community of the Clerical Congregation of the Blessed Korean Martyrs registered at Hanse-dong-gil 15 in Gong-eum-myeon, Gochang, is the Choe Yeo-gyeom Matthias Monastery, a branch established for the spiritual development and care of the Gaegap Market Martyrs’ Shrine. The Korean Catholic directory and the Diocese of Jeonju’s shrine information both confirm the close connection between the monastery and the shrine at the same site.

The community’s present role extends beyond monastic life itself. It honors the faith of Blessed Matthias Choe Yeo-gyeom, who was martyred at Gaegap Market, and cares for the shrine so that pilgrims can pray and remain there. The place is therefore both a religious-house community and a pastoral site preserving the Diocese of Jeonju’s heritage of martyrdom and supporting pilgrimage ministry.

History & origins

Gaegap Market is commemorated by the Diocese of Jeonju as a martyrdom site where Blessed Matthias Choe Yeo-gyeom was killed during the Sinyu Persecution of 1801. To preserve this memory and provide continuing care for the shrine, the Clerical Congregation of the Blessed Korean Martyrs developed a local religious-house project at the site.

Construction of Choe Yeo-gyeom Matthias Monastery began in October 2021 and continued for about seven months. The one-story, cross-shaped building has a total floor area of 396.7 square meters and includes the monastery, a dining area, and a rest space for pilgrims. A statue of Blessed Matthias Choe Yeo-gyeom was placed at the entrance, clearly expressing the purpose for which the community was established there.

On May 26, 2022, Bishop John Kim Son-tae of Jeonju presided at the blessing Mass. The diocesan record explicitly describes the monastery as a branch newly built by the congregation for the spiritual development and management of the shrine. The memory of martyrdom at Gaegap Market thus gained a living foundation in the continuing prayer of the religious community and its care for pilgrims.
