Handeul Mission Station belongs to Jinan Parish in the Diocese of Jeonju and continues the Catholic community of Jungpyeong village in Jinan-eup. The Korean Catholic directory records Handeul as a mission station established in 1901, and the Diocese of Jeonju’s current list also confirms it as a mission station under Jinan Parish. Because it is both an old mission station and a place that once served as a parish center, it has particular historical importance among the Catholic communities of the Jinan area.
Handeul is currently not an independent parish but a mission station under Jinan Parish. Yet it played a major role as Catholic life in the region grew and was reorganized. Understanding the place therefore requires looking not only at its present scale as a rural mission station but also at the fact that it once served as an actual pastoral center in the history of the Jinan parish community.
History & origins
Handeul Mission Station is recorded as having been established in 1901. As the Catholic community of the Jinan area grew, Handeul came to serve as a parish center in the 1920s and a new church was built. Diocesan records preserve evidence that during this period Handeul functioned not merely as a mission station but as an important center of pastoral life in the Jinan region.
The community and its facilities experienced difficulties during the Korean War. When the parish center was later moved to Jinan-eup, Handeul became a mission station again. In the postwar rebuilding period, diocesan accounts describe local residents and Catholics carrying materials and taking part directly in construction, showing how the rural community itself preserved its place of faith.
Handeul was raised to parish status again in 1977. In 1985, however, a diocesan pastoral reorganization closed the parish and returned Handeul to the status of a mission station under Jinan Parish, which continues today. Its repeated change from mission station to parish and back again illustrates how Catholic structures in the Jinan area were adjusted over time in response to population and pastoral conditions.
