About this place
Haga Catholic Church is a parish in District 4 of the Diocese of Jeonju, serving Catholics in Haga and its surrounding residential area. Current diocesan records name St. Elizabeth of Hungary as the parish patron. It is an independent parish community in which local Catholics continue their life of faith through Mass and the sacraments.
Haga is a relatively recent parish. It began when Catholics were separated from an existing parish community, gathered first in a temporary church, and gradually established an independent pastoral base. The parish therefore reflects the Diocese of Jeonju’s response to changing residential patterns and the formation of new Catholic communities in the northwestern part of the city.
History & origins
Haga Parish began on September 24, 2017 with a Mass marking its establishment as the 96th parish of the Diocese of Jeonju. The new community initially worshiped in a temporary church on the fourth floor of a building on Garyeonsan-ro in Deokjin-gu. It started with 132 households, about 400 Catholics, transferred from its mother parish, Deokjin.
At the founding Mass, the diocese presented the division and creation of a parish as a mission of forming a new ecclesial community. Deokjin Parish and the North Jeonju district contributed funds, while the parish-establishment committee prepared to build a new church on a separately secured site. The record shows that Haga was formed not merely by an administrative boundary change but through the participation of the new community and neighboring parishes.
Current diocesan records likewise give September 24, 2017 as the formal establishment date. From its beginnings in a temporary church, Haga developed into a local parish and continues its pastoral life today under the patronage of St. Elizabeth of Hungary.
