About this place
Haewol-ri Yunho Joseph House is a retreat house operated by the Diocese of Jeonju and is formally listed among the diocese’s current retreat facilities. It includes lodging, a hall, and a chapel, providing a place where diocesan Catholics can stay for prayer and retreats. It was designed especially to give priority to pastoral programs supporting the faith formation of young people.
The name “Yunho Joseph” commemorates St. Joseph Jo Yun-ho, who witnessed to his faith through martyrdom at a young age. The diocese explains that the house is intended to be more than accommodation: it is to be a place where younger generations can rest, pray, learn the faith, and grow in living witness. Its identity therefore brings together retreat and formation ministry with the Diocese of Jeonju’s heritage of martyr faith.
History & origins
A retreat house built in Haewol-ri in 1998 with a light steel prefabricated structure served for many years as a center for youth faith activities. As the building aged and developed safety problems, the Diocese of Jeonju decided in 2023 to construct a new retreat house. Design, permits, and demolition of the old building followed in 2024, and construction of the replacement facility began on March 22, 2025.
The new building was completed after about a year of construction and blessed on February 28, 2026 by Bishop John Kim Son-tae of Jeonju. It consists of dining and lodging wings; the lodging wing includes a chapel, hall, office, and guest rooms, with capacity for up to seventy people. The diocesan administration office was assigned to operate the facility, with priority to be given to programs of the diocesan youth ministry.
The new facility was named “Haewol-ri Yunho Joseph House.” Bishop Kim explained that the name expresses the hope that young people will learn to live and witness their faith there, following St. Joseph Jo Yun-ho, who gave his life for the faith at a young age. The retreat site that began in 1998 has thus entered a new phase in which its role in ministry to youth and young adults is made more explicit through the rebuilt facility and its martyr-inspired name.
