About this place

Gwanghwal Mission Station is a Catholic mission community in the Gimje area of the Diocese of Jeonju, historically linked with Mangyeong Parish and the faith life of a reclaimed agricultural region. The Catholic Church directory lists it as a mission station of the Diocese of Jeonju, and diocesan material identifies it as a community under Mangyeong Parish.

Its distinctive character comes from the way Catholic community formation was intertwined with settlement on reclaimed land west of the Gimje plain. Early Catholic settlers established the mission station and carried out evangelization amid rural life, and later generations continued to preserve the community even as the Catholic population declined. Gwanghwal thus shows how Catholic faith took root in a village created through reclamation and migration.

History & origins

Gwanghwal Mission Station was formed in 1931, when reclamation projects in the Gimje area were especially active. According to diocesan material, Luke Park Gyeong-rye moved to the area from Gosan, a Catholic village began to form, and the mission station was established under Suryu Parish. Park served as its first leader and worked actively in evangelization, together with John Jeon Pan-sul, another Catholic settler who arrived from Hapcheon around the same period.

After the Korean War, the mission community distributed relief supplies to neighbors in need and built trust within the local village. Jeon Pan-sul served both as mission-station leader and village head, visiting homes to combine evangelization with practical assistance, and later generations of local leaders continued the community.

In 2006, for the seventy-fifth anniversary of the mission station, the principal Sunday Mass of Mangyeong Parish was celebrated at Gwanghwal and former members who had moved to cities returned to commemorate its history. The anniversary showed how, even as the rural Catholic population declined, the community continued to remember the missionary and charitable spirit of its founding settlers.
