About this place

Gwanchon Mission Station belongs to Imsil Parish in the Diocese of Jeonju and is a local Catholic community in Gwanchon-myeon, Imsil County. The Catholic Church directory records its establishment in 1983, while a diocesan feature describes the community’s two-story building with a small dome.

Gwanchon is a representative example of a rural mission station whose church, catechetical space, and meeting rooms were made possible largely through the efforts of local Catholics. Its importance lies in the way believers living at a distance from the parish church maintained a community centered on prayer, service, and lay devotional groups.

History & origins

The construction of Gwanchon Mission Station took shape in the early 1980s through cooperation between Imsil Parish and local Catholics. According to diocesan records, Father Joseph Jo Jeong-o, who was assigned to Imsil Parish in 1981, promoted the project, and a groundbreaking ceremony was held on April 5, 1982. The mission-station leader made an initial donation, while local Catholics raised funds and contributed their own labor.

The project experienced financial difficulties, but the community organized savings groups, raised money, and involved even children and elderly members in volunteer work. Donations from benefactors in Korea and abroad also helped complete the two-story building, which included a chapel, catechetical rooms, and meeting space.

On October 7, 1983, Bishop Park Jeong-il presided over the blessing of the mission station. Men’s and women’s Legion of Mary groups were subsequently organized, making devotional and service activities an important part of community life. Gwanchon’s history is a clear example of a local Catholic community creating its own worship space and organizing itself through collective commitment.
