Gujang Mission Station

History & origins

The Catholic community of Gujang-ri formed through the movement and settlement of believers in mountain areas after the persecutions. A Diocese of Jeonju pilgrimage guide states that descendants of Saint Joseph Han Jae-gwon and Catholics who moved from the Hoemunsan area settled here and formed a Catholic village. The Catholic Church directory in Korea records 1907 as the establishment year of Gujang Mission Station, while diocesan material also refers to a mission-station building existing in 1891. These records suggest that the formation of the local community and the later formal establishment date should be distinguished.

The mission-station building was destroyed during the Korean War. In the early 1970s, during the tenure of the parish priest then responsible for the area, a new site was obtained and a new mission building was constructed. Local cultural material from Jeongeup likewise records that the wartime destruction was followed by rebuilding in the early 1970s, supporting the history of a rural Catholic community restoring its worship space after the war.

As the Catholic population and village community later declined, activity at Gujang was reduced, and the mission station is now reported to be closed. The change from a place where a priest once came to celebrate Mass to a site no longer functioning as a regular pastoral station reflects challenges faced by many rural mission communities amid population decline. Gujang now preserves, in one place, traces of the formation of a Catholic village, wartime destruction, rebuilding, and eventual decline.
