About this place
Gosan Parish is one of the long-established Catholic communities of the Wanju area in the Diocese of Jeonju, with All Saints as its patron. It currently serves a wide mountainous and rural territory including Gosan, Hwasan, Gyeongcheon, and Unju and is linked with numerous mission stations. Official diocesan information lists thirteen mission stations under the parish, showing that Gosan functions not only as a parish church but as the pastoral center of a broad network of local Catholic communities.
The relationship with Doejae Church is essential for understanding Gosan. The present parish inherits the tradition of Catholic villages formed by believers fleeing persecution and the heritage of Doejae, an important early Catholic church in the Jeolla region. Gosan is therefore both a living parish today and a place through which visitors can encounter the roots of Catholic life in the northeastern part of the Diocese of Jeonju, sustained for generations through mission stations and Catholic villages.
History & origins
The foundations of Catholic life in the Gosan area were formed early as believers fleeing persecution settled in mountain villages and created Catholic communities. According to diocesan sources, French missionaries took up residence in the area and began pastoral work in 1877, and Gosan Parish was established in 1891 when Father Udo was assigned there.
In 1894 the parish center moved to Doejae and construction of a new church began. The first Mass in the new church was celebrated on Pentecost in 1895. Doejae Church is remembered as one of the earliest completed Catholic churches in the Jeolla region and as a hanok-style church that incorporated Korean traditional architecture, making it inseparable from the early history of Gosan Parish.
The parish center, however, did not remain fixed. When Suchung became a parish in 1942, Doejae became a mission station under Suchung. The church was destroyed by fire during the Korean War in 1950. A temporary mission-station building was erected in 1954, and in 1958 the parish seat was transferred back to Gosan, after which Doejae became a mission station of Gosan Parish.
These moves and reorganizations show that the history of Gosan Parish cannot be reduced to the story of a single building. The Catholic villages of the persecution era, the church at Doejae, and the shifting pastoral center through Suchung all contributed to the formation of the present parish, which still carries this history in its network of mission stations.
