Gobun Mission Station belongs to Yeosan Parish in the Diocese of Jeonju and illustrates the historical ecclesiastical boundaries through which the Diocese of Jeonju has served part of the Yeonmu area in Nonsan, South Chungcheong Province. The current diocesan mission-station guide lists Gobun under Yeosan Parish and notes that there is no mission-station building.
Gobun today is therefore better understood as the name of a local Catholic community linked to Yeosan Parish than as a place defined by a church building that can be visited. The fact that the mission station remains in diocesan and national Catholic directories even without a building is meaningful for understanding the Korean Catholic system of rural mission communities maintaining their relationship with a parish center.
History & origins
The Catholic Church directory in Korea records Gobun Mission Station as having been established in 1957. The Korean Catholic Encyclopedia’s history of Yeosan Parish gives the same year and explains that the mission communities in this region passed through the jurisdiction of several parishes, including Nabawi, Doejae, Suchung, and Samnye, before returning to Nabawi Parish in 1956.
When Yeosan Parish was established in 1959, Gobun became one of its mission stations. This history shows why a Catholic community in the Yeonmu area of Nonsan, South Chungcheong Province, developed within the historical pastoral territory of the Diocese of Jeonju despite modern civil administrative boundaries.
A recent diocesan pilgrimage guide describes Gobun as a mission station founded in the 1950s and records that there is now no mission-station building. Its history is therefore less a story of a preserved structure than of a local Catholic community whose relationship with the parish has continued in the Church’s records and pastoral organization.
