About this place
Geumsang-dong Catholic Church is a parish of the Diocese of Jeonju, providing a place of liturgy and pastoral life for Catholics in the eastern part of Jeonju. Its patron is St. Joseph. A distinctive feature is that ordinary parish functions coexist with spaces for the interment of remains, remembrance, and prayer for the dead. Because the church was developed in connection with the site of a former diocesan cemetery, everyday parish life and prayer for the deceased meet naturally in the same place.
The complex brings together the parish church for Mass, prayer spaces, and columbarium facilities. For local Catholics it is a center for the sacraments and community life, while for bereaved families and visitors it is a place to remember the dead and meditate on Christian faith in the resurrection. Geumsang-dong Catholic Church is a distinctive example in the Diocese of Jeonju of a parish and memorial space combined within one complex, giving spatial expression to the Catholic understanding of death and resurrection.
The presence of columbarium spaces alongside the church also gives the site more than one kind of purpose. Parishioners come for Mass and the sacraments as part of ordinary life, while bereaved families come to remember and pray for the deceased. The fact that these different visits meet within the liturgical life of the same church gives concrete expression to the Catholic tradition of holding prayer for the dead together with the faith life of the living community.
History & origins
The church at Geumsang-dong began with a diocesan project to use the site of the former Sorigegae cemetery to create both a parish church and facilities for the interment and remembrance of the dead. Construction began in August 2005, and the church, prayer areas, and columbarium spaces were developed over roughly one year and seven months.
The parish community was established on January 27, 2007, and the new church was dedicated on March 30 of the same year in a liturgy presided over by Bishop Lee Byung-ho of Jeonju. The building was designed with columbarium areas, prayer rooms, and offices on its lower and middle levels, while a church seating about 350 people occupied the upper level. The plan therefore went beyond constructing a parish church: it brought ordinary parish ministry and the diocese’s ministry of remembrance into one place.
Geumsang-dong Catholic Church thereafter functioned as an independent parish for local Catholics while also retaining space for diocesan prayer for the deceased and memorial ministry. By carrying the memory of the former cemetery into a new church and columbarium complex rather than erasing it, the project transformed the site from a cemetery into a Catholic place where parish life and remembrance coexist.
The fact that columbarium capacity and prayer rooms were planned together from the beginning shows that the site was intentionally created with these two functions in mind. The later history of the parish therefore combines the establishment of the new church as a pastoral center for local Catholics with the continuation of the former cemetery’s memory in a new form through prayer for the dead and columbarium ministry.
