About this place
Geumam Catholic Church is a parish of the Diocese of Jeonju, serving Catholics centered in Geumam-dong and neighboring parts of Deokjin-gu, Jeonju. Its patron is St. Jeong Mun-ho Bartholomew, a martyr associated with the Jeonju area. The parish is an urban place where Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community activities form the ordinary rhythm of Catholic life.
Geumam-dong lies within a busy residential and transportation area of central Jeonju, and the parish has the character of an urban community formed amid changes in population and neighborhood development. Rather than being primarily a pilgrimage or tourist destination, it is a place where local Catholics sustain everyday faith. Through its patron saint, it is also linked to the martyr tradition of the Diocese of Jeonju. Visitors can best understand the church through its present parish community and local pastoral role.
The patron, St. Jeong Mun-ho Bartholomew, is one of the figures who represents the martyr tradition of the Diocese of Jeonju. Through his name, Geumam Parish connects ordinary urban parish life with the memory of local martyrdom and gives Catholics an opportunity to recall the faith of earlier believers in Jeonju within everyday Mass and prayer. In this sense, the parish’s significance lies more in its community and patronal tradition than in architectural distinction.
History & origins
The Geumam-dong area was long part of the territory of Jeonju’s Jungang Parish. As the city expanded and the number of Catholics in Geumam-dong increased, Jungang Parish saw the need for a new parish and in 1981 organized a committee to prepare for construction of a church.
Construction formally began with a groundbreaking ceremony on June 18, 1982, and the new church building was completed in January 1985. The Korean Catholic Encyclopedia records that, upon completion, 312 households comprising 983 Catholics were transferred from Jungang Parish to the new community. Because the current Diocese of Jeonju record and the older encyclopedia differ on the exact day in January on which the parish was established, this account uses only the common and undisputed date of January 1985.
Geumam Catholic Church thus became an independent parish in response to the growth of an existing urban parish and the expansion of the surrounding neighborhood. The building project and parish division adjusted the territory of Jungang Parish and created a pastoral center closer to Catholics in the Geumam-dong living area, establishing the parish that continues to serve Geumam and nearby neighborhoods.
The project promoted by Jungang Parish was not merely the construction of another building; it was also a reorganization of a growing urban Catholic population into a smaller pastoral unit. With an independent parish in the Geumam-dong living area, Catholics could receive Mass and the sacraments closer to home, while Jungang Parish could readjust its increasingly broad urban territory. The division was one episode in the wider subdivision of parish structures as Jeonju expanded.
