About this place

Eocheongdo Mission Station belongs to Soryong-dong Parish in the Diocese of Jeonju and serves the Catholic community on Eocheongdo, an island off Gunsan. The diocese's current mission-station page confirms its jurisdiction under Soryong-dong Parish. As a place where the diocese has maintained pastoral care for an island community, it has a character distinct from most inland mission stations.

Because Eocheongdo is separated from the mainland, residents cannot easily reach a parish church on a regular basis. The mission station has therefore served as a local center where Catholics can pray together and where Mass and the sacraments can be celebrated when a priest from the mother parish visits. Though small, its central meaning lies in sustaining Catholic life within the particular conditions of an island community.

History & origins

According to the Diocese of Jeonju's history of the mission station, Catholic life on Eocheongdo began when Yi Bu-yeon (James) was assigned to the island as a lighthouse worker and moved there with his family in 1956. Through his relationships with island residents he shared his faith, and his contact with Yi Deuk-rok in particular helped connect another local resident with the Church, leading to the beginnings of a small Catholic community.

Because the island lies far from the mainland, Catholic life there could not depend on a resident parish priest and instead developed through pastoral visits from the mainland. The diocesan account presents Eocheongdo as a distinctive island mission station, where Catholics sustained common prayer and liturgical life despite the limitations of their location.

The community eventually became established as a mission station under Soryong-dong Parish, a relationship that remains in the diocese's current records. Eocheongdo's history is marked not by large construction projects or elevation to parish status, but by the way a small number of believers among a lighthouse and fishing community began Catholic life and maintained it through mutual support and visits from their mother parish.
