About this place
Duhwa Mission Station is under Yeosan Parish of the Catholic Diocese of Jeonju. Although it is administratively located in Yeonmu-eup, Nonsan, Chungcheongnam-do, it belongs to the pastoral jurisdiction of the Jeonju Diocese. The current diocesan mission-station directory confirms both its affiliation with Yeosan Parish and the existence of its building, and the station serves Catholics in a border area linking Jeonbuk and Chungcheongnam-do.
Catholic communities in the wider Yeosan region grew as believers who had fled persecution from several regions formed Catholic villages. Duhwa belongs to this historical network and today continues as a rural mission station connected to Yeosan Parish. It is also a useful example of how Catholic diocesan boundaries in Korea do not always coincide exactly with ordinary civil administrative boundaries.
History & origins
Catholic faith spread in the Yeosan region during the late Joseon period as believers fleeing persecution from Chungcheong, Gyeonggi, and other areas formed Catholic villages. During the Mujin Persecution of 1868, many Catholics were martyred in Yeosan and nearby places, and after the persecution a network of mission stations gradually developed around the scattered Catholic villages.
Duhwa Mission Station was established in 1901 within this setting. Together with other mission stations in the Yeosan area, it passed through the jurisdiction of Nabawi and Doejae Parishes and later belonged to Sucheong Parish. After 1950 it came under Samnye Parish, and from 1956 it was again under Nabawi Parish.
When Yeosan Parish was established as an independent parish in 1959, Duhwa became one of its mission stations. The history of Duhwa therefore records how a local Catholic community continued despite repeated changes in its mother parish, and forms part of the wider transition in the Yeosan region from persecution-era Catholic villages to the modern parish system.
