About this place
Dotong-dong Parish is a parish of the Catholic Diocese of Jeonju serving the Namwon area. Centered on Dotong-dong, it has pastoral responsibility for parts of the city as well as a number of surrounding rural townships. Its patron is Our Lady of Fatima. By linking an urban residential area with a broad rural territory, the parish serves as a center where Catholics of eastern Namwon participate in Mass and the sacraments and receive faith formation.
Its jurisdiction extends beyond neighborhoods near the city center to several outlying myeon districts. Dotong-dong Parish therefore has a clear role not merely as a church building, but as a parish that brings Catholics from different living environments into one community. Although it is a relatively modern parish, it is significant as a community established within the wider growth of Namwon and the Diocese of Jeonju’s expansion of local parish structures.
History & origins
Dotong-dong Parish was established on July 15, 1990, after being separated from Ssanggyo-dong Parish in Namwon. The Korean Catholic Encyclopedia explains that its creation was connected with the Diocese of Jeonju’s effort, marking the fiftieth anniversary of the diocese, to increase the number of parishes in smaller cities. An independent parish community was thus created for a developing area on the outskirts of Namwon.
The new parish quickly established the basic spaces needed for its life. On a 795-pyeong site, a 103-pyeong prefabricated light-steel church and a 33-pyeong rectory were built and completed on November 17, 1990. This gave the newly formed community a stable physical base for Mass and pastoral activity.
A branch of the Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Mary was established on February 27, 1994. The sequence of parish foundation, construction of its church facilities, and collaboration with a religious community shows how Dotong-dong developed into a stable pastoral community serving both new residential districts and the wider Namwon area.
