About this place

Dongmak Mission Station is under Chilbo Parish of the Catholic Diocese of Jeonju and stands within a long-established Catholic village in Chilbo-myeon, Jeongeup. The Diocese of Jeonju’s current mission-station directory confirms the same location and jurisdiction, and the station remains a local Catholic community where believers in a rural area away from the parish church gather for prayer and maintain their bonds of faith.

Dongmak is distinctive because it represents more than a small chapel: for generations, village life and Catholic community life have closely overlapped here. The station offers a view of the way rural Korean Catholic communities were organized around mission stations and how lay believers transmitted faith from one generation to the next, making it an important place for understanding the Catholic village and mission-station tradition of the Diocese of Jeonju.

History & origins

The Catholic community around Dongmak took root when believers fleeing persecution during the Byeongin Persecution settled in this mountainous area after coming from Gyeongsang and other regions. They supported themselves by making pottery, and pottery vessels also helped in carrying Catholic books and devotional objects to other Catholic villages. On the foundation of this community, Dongmak Mission Station was established in 1897 by Father Lacrouts of Suryu Parish.

Even after the mission station was established, it had no dedicated building for many years. For roughly sixty years, Catholics rotated services among their homes, and after the Korean War the village moved closer to the site of the present station. In 1957 the believers finally built their first mission chapel themselves with earth and timber and held a blessing ceremony.

That first building served the community for about thirty years. In 1986 a new brick chapel was built and dedicated, becoming the continuing center of the community. The progression from a persecution-era Catholic village to home-based services, communal construction, and a permanent chapel illustrates the way lay Catholic life endured at Dongmak.
