About this place

Deungyong Parish belongs to the Catholic Diocese of Jeonju and serves Catholic communities in Haseo-myeon, Byeonsan-myeon, and Wido-myeon of Buan County. Its patron is Our Lady of Sorrows, and it also has pastoral responsibility for Mapo Mission Station in the Byeonsan area. Covering a broad area that includes farming communities, the coast, and islands, the parish is a center where Catholics continue their life of Mass, the sacraments, faith formation, and community.

The present identity of the parish also carries the tradition of the long-established Catholic community of Deungyong. The parish center was once transferred to Buan-eup, leaving Deungyong as a mission station, before the community was later re-established as an independent parish. Today Deungyong is both a pastoral center linking Catholics across Haseo, Byeonsan, and Wido and a place that expresses the long continuity of Catholic life in the Buan area.

History & origins

The Catholic community in Deungyong began to take shape in the early twentieth century around John Kim Yang-bae. By about 1903, several Catholic households had formed a village community, and as it grew they prepared a church and rectory. In December 1918, Bishop Florian Demange visited and blessed the new church and rectory; the church at that time was dedicated under the patronage of Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows.

The community was raised to parish status in 1926, with Father James Lee Gi-su serving as its first pastor. In 1935, however, the center of the parish was transferred to Buan-eup, and Deungyong again became a mission station. The village suffered heavily during the Korean War, while the mission building escaped relatively serious damage, and the community continued its Catholic life amid the aftermath of war. A new mission chapel was built in 1972.

After many years as a mission station connected with parishes in the Buan area, Deungyong was re-established as an independent parish in 2010. In 2018 it commemorated the centenary of the 1918 blessing of the church. Its course from Catholic village to parish, back to mission station, and again to parish shows how the community preserved its place of faith through major changes in population and pastoral circumstances.
