About this place

Deungcheon Mission Station belongs to Sigi-dong Parish in the Catholic Diocese of Jeonju and continues the tradition of one of the long-established Catholic village communities in the Jeongeup area. As a mission station, it has served Catholics living at a distance from the parish church as a place to pray together and share their faith, and its identity is linked with families who settled in the area after periods of persecution and sustained a Catholic community across generations.

The mission station is therefore more than a small place of worship. It preserves evidence of how Catholic faith continued within local village life in southern Jeongeup. Memories of martyrs and of Catholics who endured persecution form part of the background of the community, and Deungcheon today can be understood as a place that connects that inheritance with the wider parish community.

History & origins

The Catholic community around Deungcheon is closely connected with the movement of Catholics during and after the Byeongin Persecution. A history published by the Diocese of Jeonju records that Catholics related to the family of Saints Peter Jo Hwa-seo and Joseph Jo Yun-ho, who were martyred in 1866, settled in this area after the persecution and formed a community. Families including that of Francis Jo gathered here, giving rise to the Catholic village of Deungcheon.

A parish visitation record from 1895 lists nineteen Catholics in the Deungcheon area, and diocesan material uses that year as the reference point for the establishment of the mission station. The record shows that faith once sustained in scattered households had developed into an organized local community with continuing ties to the parish. Deungcheon thereafter remained a village with a substantial Catholic presence for many years.

In 1957 the community prepared and blessed a new mission chapel, giving it a more stable place for Catholic life. The progression from refuge and resettlement during persecution to an organized mission station, and the continuation of faith in the same area after the war, are the defining features of Deungcheon’s history.
