About this place
Deokjin Parish belongs to the Catholic Diocese of Jeonju and has pastoral responsibility for all of Deokjin-dong and part of Geumam 1-dong in Jeonju. Its patron is Saint Peter Canisius, the Jesuit theologian and Doctor of the Church. Located in the residential and educational area of northern Jeonju, the parish serves as a local center of Catholic life through Mass, the sacraments, faith formation, and the shared life of its community.
Although its present jurisdiction is that of a local parish, Deokjin also served as a mother parish as new Catholic communities were formed around it during the urban expansion of northern Jeonju. The church is therefore significant not only as the parish serving Catholics in Deokjin today, but also as a place that helps explain how Catholic communities in northern Jeonju grew and were gradually organized into separate parishes.
History & origins
Deokjin Parish was established on June 14, 1964. It was created to serve a new local Catholic community at a time when the urban area of Jeonju was expanding northward, and later became a base from which additional parishes could be formed as population patterns and Catholic life in the Deokjin area changed.
Parish divisions continued in the 1980s. In particular, despite financial difficulties, Deokjin Parish purchased a 709-pyeong church site in the Songcheon-dong area in February 1984. Construction of a new church began on August 30, 1986, and the building was completed the following year.
Songcheon-dong Parish was formally established as a separate parish on July 16, 1987, and the new church was dedicated the next day. This sequence shows that Deokjin Parish did more than maintain its own community: it helped prepare the foundations for new parishes to take root as northern Jeonju continued to grow.
