About this place
Daeya Catholic Church is a parish in the fifth district of the Diocese of Jeonju, serving a broad rural territory centered on Daeya-myeon in Gunsan and extending into Gaejeong, Impi, Seosu, Hoehyeon, Seongsan, and neighboring areas. Its patron is the Immaculate Heart of Mary. The parish functions as a pastoral center linking Catholics scattered across several rural townships through Mass and the sacraments.
Unlike a parish centered on a single urban neighborhood, Daeya covers a wide rural living area. Catholics have maintained their faith by moving between the parish church and smaller local communities, while the parish has brought dispersed believers together through catechesis, devotional practices, and communal life. Visitors can see here a characteristic form of parish life in the rural western part of North Jeolla, where the history of villages and mission stations is closely connected with the life of the parish.
The parish’s wide territory clearly shows the role a single church can play in a rural region. Unlike cities where separate parishes may serve individual administrative neighborhoods, Catholics from several townships are connected through Daeya, which functions as a common center linking local communities and families. This structure is an important example for understanding rural pastoral ministry in the western part of the Diocese of Jeonju.
History & origins
The direct predecessor of the Catholic community in Daeya was the Sindang mission station, which developed under the parish serving the Gunsan area. Around 1948 a mission-station community took root at Sindang, where Catholics began to gather regularly under the pastoral care of the Gunsan parish.
As the number of Catholics increased, a more stable chapel was prepared in the Daeya area. A former rice-mill building was purchased and converted into a mission chapel, which was blessed on August 22, 1951. Regular Mass followed, and the community continued to grow. When the Catholic population reached about 400, Daeya Parish was formally established on April 20, 1956, through separation from Dunyul-dong Parish.
The new parish served a broad rural territory together with its mission-station communities. From 1971 to 1975 there was a period without a resident pastor, but Sunday Mass and community life continued through visits by priests from neighboring parishes and the cooperation of lay leaders. This history shows a rural Catholic community that grew from a mission station into an independent parish and then sustained its faith through lay cooperation even during a shortage of resident clergy.
Lay participation was especially important both in the early years of Daeya Parish and during the period without a resident pastor. As the mission station developed into a parish, Catholics participated in securing worship space and maintaining the community, and when no priest lived there they worked with visiting clergy to sustain Sunday Catholic life. This experience shows how, in a parish with a broad rural territory, priestly ministry and lay responsibility together supported the continuity of the community.
