About this place
Chukdong Church is a parish of the Diocese of Jeonju serving the Gunsan area, with a community established in 2000. The current diocesan parish information identifies the Sacred Heart of Jesus as its patron. The name 'Chukdong' comes from the local village name where the church stands, connecting the parish's identity with the neighborhood and everyday community it serves.
The parish did not use its present name from the beginning. After resolving confusion caused by its former name, which was easily mistaken for that of its mother parish, Naun-dong, the community adopted the local place name as its parish name. The current identity of Chukdong Church is therefore shaped both by a name that clearly expresses its local setting and by its dedication to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Visitors can understand it not simply as a named church building but as a parish community in which the liturgical and communal life of local Catholics continues.
History & origins
Chukdong Parish was established on January 29, 2000, and initially used the name 'Naun 2-dong Church.' Because this name closely resembled that of its mother parish, Naun-dong, confusion arose in practice, and the community came to see the need for a name that would identify the parish more clearly.
According to a diocesan report, the parish decided in September 2012 to change its name and invited parishioners to submit proposals. Names based on local geography, saints, and native Korean words were suggested; after voting narrowed the options to Chukdong, Peter, and Ariul, the diocese selected 'Chukdong Church.' Since Chukdong is the name of the village in which the church stands, the new name directly expressed the parish's local setting.
The change was more than a correction of wording. It reduced confusion with the mother parish and gave the community a clearer local identity. The Diocese of Jeonju has since used Chukdong Church in its official parish listings and information, linking the history of the community established in 2000 with its present name.
