About this place

Cheonho Parish belongs to District 4 of the Diocese of Jeonju and has pastoral jurisdiction over Daechi-ri in Bibong-myeon, Wanju County. Its patron is Saint Bartholomew, and the Diocese of Jeonju’s current profile records a community of the Korean Martyrs’ Sisters and one mission station associated with the parish. Though small in scale, it is an independent parish where local Catholics form a community and celebrate Mass and the sacraments.

The Cheonho area is also widely known for the Cheonho Shrine and its burial grounds of Catholic martyrs. Cheonho Parish should nevertheless be distinguished from the shrine complex as a whole: it is the parish church responsible for a local Catholic community within the same broader environment of faith. The close coexistence of a shrine dedicated to the memory of martyrs and ordinary parish pastoral life is one of the important features of the place.

History & origins

The Diocese of Jeonju’s historical chronology records the creation of “Cheonho Quasi-Parish” on January 28, 2011. This organized Cheonho village and the Daechi-ri area of Bibong-myeon, Wanju County, as a distinct pastoral unit. The diocese’s current parish profile gives January 30, 2011, as the establishment date of Cheonho Parish, so the record of the quasi-parish’s creation and the present parish establishment record follow each other within a matter of days.

The new parish provided a structure in which the pilgrimage environment of the Cheonho Shrine area and the ordinary parish life of local Catholics could coexist. The current parish patron is Saint Bartholomew; the parish serves Daechi-ri and includes a community of the Korean Martyrs’ Sisters. This shows that, alongside the shrine’s pilgrimage function, a continuing liturgical and pastoral unit for local Catholics became established in the area.

The street-number address in the package differs from the address currently shown in the Diocese of Jeonju parish profile. However, the parish name, diocese, locality, patron, and 2011 establishment records clearly refer to the same Cheonho Parish. This history therefore limits itself to the verified establishment and formation of the pastoral unit, while the exact street-number discrepancy should be handled as a separate data-verification issue.
