About this place
Busong-dong Parish belongs to the Sixth District of the Catholic Diocese of Jeonju and serves an urban Catholic community in and around Busong-dong in Iksan. Its patron is the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The parish was separated and established as residential districts in eastern Iksan grew, allowing local Catholics to celebrate Mass and the sacraments and to participate in catechesis, devotional life, and community activities closer to where they live.
Although Busong-dong is a comparatively recent urban parish, it developed its own church building and an independent community base after its establishment. Its formation reflects a pastoral response by the Diocese of Jeonju to the expansion of Iksan, in which the territory of an existing parish was divided more finely to improve pastoral access. The identity of the place is therefore tied less to an old Catholic village than to the creation of a new parish community alongside the growth of the modern city.
History & origins
Busong-dong Parish was established as an independent parish in January 2003 in response to the growth of the Catholic population and urban expansion in eastern Iksan. The diocesan chronology shows that Busong-dong emerged when the territory of Eoyang-dong Parish was divided into several communities. One of the first major tasks of the new parish was to secure a permanent church and the facilities needed for parish life.
Soon after its establishment, the community began construction of a new church. After about one year and eight months of work, a four-story complex was completed with the church, rectory, hall, meeting rooms, confessionals, and spaces for education and fellowship. Bishop Lee Byeong-ho presided at the dedication Mass for the new church on June 24, 2005. In a relatively short period, the newly established parish had created the physical setting needed for independent pastoral life.
Busong-dong has since continued as a parish community within one of Iksan's expanded residential districts. The sequence from parish establishment to church construction clearly reflects the Diocese of Jeonju's early-2000s response to changing population and living patterns in Iksan by dividing older parish territories and creating new pastoral centers.
