About this place

Buan Parish belongs to the Fifth District of the Catholic Diocese of Jeonju and is a long-established pastoral center serving Catholics in Buan-eup and several surrounding rural districts. Its patron is Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus. For many years it has connected Catholics in the town with those in farming and coastal communities and has served as a central parish for the wider Catholic life of the Buan area.

The parish has also at times been a place where Catholic faith was brought into conversation with questions of life, peace, and responsibility within the local community. Past diocesan records recall that Buan Parish became a gathering place for Catholics and residents during campaigns concerning the preservation of the Saemangeum tidal flats and other local life-and-peace issues. This experience is one reason the parish is remembered not only as a place of liturgy and sacraments but also as a place where the life of the Catholic community has met the life of the wider region.

History & origins

Buan Parish was established on May 29, 1926. It emerged as the Catholic pastoral network expanded across the western coastal and plain regions of the Diocese of Jeonju and developed into a parish centered on Buan-eup with responsibility for surrounding Catholic communities and mission stations. The parish continues under the patronage of Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus.

The present church building is not the original structure from the time of the parish's foundation. A diocesan bulletin records that the current church was dedicated on August 27, 1963. The construction of a new church in the mid-twentieth century gave the parish a lasting pastoral base in Buan and allowed it to continue serving as a center while surrounding mission communities and parish structures developed.

In later decades, Buan Parish was also involved in experiences that extended beyond internal parish life. Diocesan records recall that the church became a place for Mass and gatherings during local movements concerning the preservation of the Saemangeum tidal flats, life and peace, and the proposed nuclear-waste site in Buan. The history of the parish therefore extends from its foundation in the 1920s and the construction of its church in the 1960s to a continuing Catholic presence lived in relationship with the wider local community.
