About this place
Bongdong Parish belongs to the Fourth District of the Catholic Diocese of Jeonju and serves all of Bongdong-eup together with parts of Gosan-myeon and Yongjin-eup in Wanju County. Its patron is Saint Joseph Han Jae-gwon. The parish is a center for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, devotional life, and fellowship, and it serves the Bongdong area within the northern pastoral network of parishes and mission stations spread across Wanju.
Since its establishment, the parish community has developed an independent Catholic life in the area and has also created spaces for education and the preservation of memory. Its education hall contains a parish history room where the community can look back on its own development. This shows that Bongdong is not only a place for present-day liturgy and pastoral activity but also a parish that consciously preserves its history and passes it on to later generations.
History & origins
Bongdong Parish was established as an independent parish of the Diocese of Jeonju on September 1, 1995. It arose from the pastoral need for a distinct parish community centered on Bongdong-eup in Wanju County and has served the liturgical and sacramental life of local Catholics under the patronage of Saint Joseph Han Jae-gwon.
As the parish community developed, its facilities expanded to include stronger educational and community functions. In 2019 the Han Jae-gwon Hall, an education center, was completed, and a parish history room was created inside it to preserve and display records of the community's past. On the eve of the parish's twenty-fifth anniversary, the desire to preserve its history thus took concrete form in a dedicated space.
On September 20, 2020, Bishop Kim Sun-tae presided at a Mass marking the twenty-fifth anniversary of the parish together with the celebration of Confirmation. Sixty-one parishioners received Confirmation, and a hand-copied Bible prepared collectively by the faithful was offered during the Mass. The anniversary gave the community an opportunity to look back on a generation of parish life and to renew its commitment to handing on the faith.
