About this place
Bokja Catholic Church is an urban parish of the Diocese of Jeonju in central Jeonju, dedicated to the Korean martyrs of the Byeongin Persecution. Its name and patronal identity clearly express the remembrance of Korea's Catholic martyrs, linking the parish community with the Diocese of Jeonju's tradition of honoring those who gave their lives for the faith.
Today Bokja Parish serves several neighborhoods in central Jeonju through the Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and parish pastoral ministry. At the same time, because its foundation began as part of the centenary commemoration of the Byeongin Persecution, it carries a commemorative meaning alongside its ordinary role as a territorial parish, keeping the memory of Korean martyrdom within the life of the local Church.
History & origins
The foundation of Bokja Parish was directly connected with the Korean Church's commemoration of the centenary of the Byeongin Persecution. In 1964 the Korean bishops decided that each diocese should build a memorial church for the centenary. The Diocese of Jeonju followed with clergy meetings in 1965 and an appeal by Bishop Peter Han Kong-ryul to establish a church honoring the martyrs. Land was purchased with contributions from clergy and faithful, and on December 16, 1965, Bokja Parish was created from portions of Jeondong and Jungang parishes.
Soon after the parish was established, a temporary chapel was provided while plans for a permanent church continued. Construction began in March 1967, the church was completed in September, and it was dedicated on October 3. The Korean Catholic Encyclopedia records that Father Allen of Waegwan designed the church, which had a floor area of about 122 pyeong. A rectory was added the following year.
Bokja Parish therefore did not begin simply as a local parish that later acquired a memorial meaning. From the outset it was founded with a diocesan purpose of commemorating the centenary of the martyrs. As it developed into an urban parish, its foundation and church building remained important witnesses to the Diocese of Jeonju's history of honoring the Korean martyrs.
