Beonam Mission Station belongs to Jangsu Parish in the Diocese of Jeonju and serves the Catholic community of Beonam-myeon in Jangsu-gun. Current diocesan records confirm its location and jurisdiction under Jangsu Parish, while diocesan historical reporting shows that the community has continued since the early twentieth century.
The present mission station has its own red-brick building and grounds, providing a place where Catholics living at a distance from the parish church can gather for prayer and Mass. Although small in scale, the community has long been sustained through its mission leadership and continues to serve as a local center of faith connected with Jangsu Parish despite the population decline affecting rural areas.
History & origins
Beonam Mission Station was established in 1916. According to the Diocese of Jeonju, Augustine Seo Byeong-rok served as its first mission leader, and a community of about twenty Catholics began holding mission-station prayers. In its early years, priests could visit only infrequently, and the small mountain community was able to celebrate Mass mainly around Easter and Christmas.
The community experienced renewed vitality in the late 1980s. During the tenure of Father Kang Deok-haeng at Jangsu Parish, the Catholics of Beonam undertook the construction of a new mission chapel. They helped raise funds by selling bracken, wild greens, omija berries, kimchi, and other goods. On October 22, 1988, the new mission chapel was blessed in a ceremony attended by about four hundred people.
The community continued to care for the building in later years. In 2017 the original slab roof was replaced with a panel roof and the grounds were improved. The history of Beonam Mission Station is therefore the story of a small Catholic community that preserved its prayers, built and maintained its own sacred space, and sustained a place of faith in a rural region.
